Melrose Ranch has a storied history!
In the early 1980’s the world was enthralled at the romance and Wedding (July 29, 1981) of Charles, the Prince of Wales and Diana Spencer. In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s the world was equally captivated with the romance and love story of the young Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson (an American divorcee). After his father King George V died in 1936, the Prince was crowned King Edward VIII.
Said to be the greatest love story of the 20th Century, the Prince/King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson would often come to San Diego to stay at Melrose Ranch, where his good friend Lord Somerville had purchased 640 acres (1925) from the Mendenhall Family -to build what is now referred to as the Melrose Manor.
